Researchers analysed over 2.5 lakh scenes from the Landsat satellite missions. They used 30 years of NASA satellite data and have found that the volume of these lakes worldwide has increased by about 50% since 1990 as glaciers melt and retreat due to climate change
The findings have been published in the journal Nature Climate Change. It estimates current glacial lake volumes total about 156 cubic kilometers of water, the equivalent of about one-third of Lake Erie’s volume in North America.
