7 killed, 3 injured as two cars collide near Lonavala

Pune: Seven people were killed and three others injured after two cars collided with each other near Lonavala on the old Pune-Mumbai Highway this afternoon, police said. The driver of one of the cars, headed towards Lonavala, lost control over the vehicle after its tyre burst near Karla Phata, they said.

As a result, the car jumped into the opposite lane and rammed into another car, which was headed to Pune, the police said. The deceased included four members of a family — Rajiv Jagannath Bahirat (52), Sonali Rajiv Bahirat (46), Janhavi Rajiv Bahirat (20) and Jagannath Bahirat (82), all residents of Mundhwa in Pune.

Sanjeev Kushwah (17), Krishna Shirsath (22) and Nikhil Shirsath (20), residents of Rahatani in Pune, were in the car which was heading to Lonavala. They were going to Lonavala for a picnic, the police said. The three other injured persons were admitted to a nearby hospital.
