9000 COVID-19 deaths in Karnataka in 92 days

Bengaluru: On October 12, it has been seven months since the first COVID-19 death was reported in the State.

On March 12, a 76-year-old at Kalaburgi was the first to succumb to the infection.

A few days ago, the COVID-19 death toll in the State crossed the ten thousand mark.

In the past three months (92 days) 9,000 people succumbed to the virus averaging at 101 deaths per day.

The first four months (March 12 to July 12) saw 757 COVID-19 deaths and the following three months (July 13 to October 12) 9,279 infected people died.

There has been more than a tenfold rise in the number of COVID-19 deaths in the past three months.

Only 3 deaths occurred in March, while in April, May and June it was 18, 30, 195, respectively.

The numbers rose from July with 2,068, deaths reported in that month. In August 3,296 and in September 3162 have died.

The increase in the number of deaths has continued in October too, with 1,172 deaths in only 12 days.

So far, 76 per cent of those who died of the infection are over 50 years old. Of these, 5,200 (50 per cent) are over the age of 60. 13.5 per cent are between 41-50 years of age, 6 per cent are between 31 to 40 years of age, 2 per cent are between 21 to 30 years of age, 0.4 per cent between 11 to 20 years of age and 0.2 per cent between 0 to 10 years of age.

The mortality rate in terms of age is 0.1 per cent for 0 to 30-year-olds, 0.4 per cent for 31-40-year-olds, 1.1 per cent for 41 to 50-year-olds, 2.4 per cent for 51 to 60-year-olds and 5.5 per cent for people over 60 years of age.

The data makes it clear that COVID-19 mortality rate is higher in the elderly.

The mortality rate is higher than 2 per cent in five districts of the State. Dharwad recorded 2.8 per cent, Bidar 2.4 per cent, Dakshina Kannada 2.3 per cent, Mysuru 2.1 per cent and Koppal 2 per cent.
