An exclusive interview with GST Commissioner Rajesh Prasad

Udupi: Central Tax Commissioner Rajesh Prasad visited Vaikunta Baliga law college and his old school at Hiriadka where he studied and communicated with the students there on Thursday. He later spoke with ‘Udayavani’ and answered question in GST.

Is GST successful?

It is achieving complete success. Other few countries which introduced GST had to face the problem of inflation. In Malaysia faced a problem after implementing a single tax slab foe everything. But, since different tax slabs were introduced here, the problem of inflation was evaded.

Who gets how much profit because of GST?

Earlier, there were many indirect taxes. Now, for few things the tax levied has either remained unchanged or has been decreased, but no increased. Tax frauds have also decreased. Tax on several daily use products has been decreased. Earlier, the tax which was from 28% to 33% has been decreased to 18%. Many things have been kept free of tax. Consumers have profited. If the consumers do not get the profit, they can even file a complaint. Legal action is possible.

What is the solution to the problem with GST payment facility?

Most of the initial problems have been solved. For the first time in the world, ‘Invoice Matching’ IT system has been implemented here. Any problem anywhere will be solved immediately.

There is objection to penalty for payment defaulters?

Fine will not be levied on errors occurring due to technical problem. Fine is levied only on those who willfully do not pay the tax. Action will also be taken against the erring company.

Do local officials do not have the authority to rectify problems?

There is. But it is impossible for them to rectify technical problems. That needs to be brought to the attention of the concerned GST division. GST council meeting will be conducted to deal with GST problems.

From Bommarabetta school to becoming GST Commisioner…

Rajesh Prasad is a native of Bommarabetta in Hiriadka. He pursued his primary education from the government primary school at Bommarabetta, high school from Hiriadka government high school, followed by graduation in B Com from MGM College.

After clearing IAS he gave his service as the DC at Goa, Arunachal Pradesh and New Delhi. He also served as the commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority and is currently serving as the GST commissioner.
