On July 16, a massive landslide occurred on the highway near Shiruru, completely blocking the Mangaluru-Goa National Highway. The landslide resulted in a significant mound of soil on the road, leading to the disappearance of 11 people. Out of them, the bodies of eight individuals were recovered. Despite continued search efforts, the remaining three individuals could not be found, and the search operation has been temporarily suspended.
After the debris was cleared from the road, the District Commissioner granted permission for vehicles to use the highway. Currently, only one-way traffic is allowed on the highway, with instructions given to IRB to install safety barriers on both sides.
However, concerns about further landslides persist, and vehicle drivers are advised to proceed with caution while traveling on this stretch of the highway.
