Apex Court stays Karnataka Akrama-Sakrama scheme proceedings

New Delhi: A Supreme Court bench comprising chief justice has ordered the Karnataka government to stop all proceedings under Akrama Sakrama scheme immediately. The apex court in an order has cancelled the order issued by the high court on Akrama Sakrama in December last year after hearing an appeal submitted by Namma Bengaluru Foundation on Friday.

The supreme court has decided to hear the petition submitted by the foundation as it has valuable arguments against the scheme. The apex court will hear the petition in upcoming days and also opined that a lengthy debate is necessary to came into a conclusion on the matter.

Last year, Karnataka high court had given its green signal to the state government’s Akrama-Sakrama scheme aimed to convert illegal structures, buildings, land and others into legal based on certain restrictions in the state after dismissing two separate Public Interest Litigations (PIL) submitted by the Mangaluru Abhivridhi Nagarika Vedike and Namma Bengaluru Foundation urging the high court to cancel state government's notification on Akrama-Sakrama issued on May 28, 2014 to convert illegal structures, land and others into legal based on certain criteria.
