New Delhi: The government has directed army canteens across the country to stop the procurement of direct imported goods, according to a Reuters report.

According to the report, the defence ministry in its internal order dated October 19 has said that procurement of direct imported items shall not be undertaken in future. Apparently, the move aims to boost the ‘vocal for local’ campaign of the government.

While the order does not mention the list of products, it is believed that the move will see affect foreign liquor firms. As per reports, the annual sales turnover of imported liquor sales at defence stores stands at around $17 million.

The other imported products which account for bulk of sales at army canteens includes electronics, Chinese products such as diapers, vacuum cleaners, handbags and laptops.
