BBMP keeps its promise to zones; earmarks Rs 667 crore for development work

Bengaluru: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has allotted Rs 667 crore to eight zones in Bengaluru for undertaking various development work in the city. It is part of the Rs 2,000 crore grant promised in the budget for 2021-22.

Out of the Rs 667 crore, Rs 269 crore has been earmarked for 16 development projects which will be implemented at zonal levels.

BBMP has allocated a total of Rs 150 crore for all 198 wards.  Rs 29.82 will be spent on the maintenance of ward roads. Also, each ward will get Rs 20 lakh to fill potholes and another Rs 20 lakh to repair borewells. However, Former city councilors claim that the amount is too less and demand to restore the previous system where the newly-added wards falling under the core area were given Rs 3 crore and Rs 2 crore.

Out of the Rs 667 Crore Rs 20 crore has been allocated for the lake division, Rs 61.70 crore has been earmarked towards maintaining street lights, lighting in parks, and toilet amenities.

Rs 71 crore has been allocated for the construction and annual maintenance of a stormwater drain at Vrishabhavathi valley. Rs 50 crore has been given to the BBMP’s road infrastructure division for maintaining arterial and sub arterial roads.

Also, Rs 45.45 crore grant has been provided for undertaking 12 works implemented by the Projects division of the BBMP which include modernizing the BBMP head office, repairs and maintenance of BBMP quarters, maintenance of roads, flyovers and subways, rainwater harvesting in railway over bridges, repair and maintenance of animal birth control centers etc.
