The man claimed that the gang would call him and demand the money as service charges.

At first, he got a call from a person named Sonia Singh who informed him that he had been awarded Rs 3.5 lakh under the senior citizen scheme. After which another woman named Anamika Sharma called him to get his bank account details.

In March 2021, the elderly man received another call from a man demanding Rs 20,999 towards the service charge.  After the victim transferred the amount, two other accused called him up to update him on the scheme’s approval.
