Bengaluru: Renowned writer Kamala Hampana passes away

Bengaluru: Esteemed writer Dr. Kamala Hampana passed away this morning (Saturday) due to a heart attack. She was 88 years old.

Kamala Hampana had been suffering from age-related health issues and was residing with her elder daughter, Rajashree, in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. Family sources said that she suffered a heart attack early Saturday morning.

She is survived by her husband, the notable writer and researcher H.M. Nagarajayya, two daughters, and a son.

Her mortal remains will be brought to her residence on 18th Cross, Rajajinagar, for public viewing, according to family members.

The family has informed the media that Dr. Kamala Hampana’s body will be donated to M.S. Ramaiah Medical College as per her wishes.

Kamala Hampana was a distinguished orator and, along with her husband H.M. Nagarajayya, was honored with the Nadoja Award by Hampi University. She retired as the principal of Maharani College in Bengaluru.

Kamala Hampana’s work spanned ancient Kannada literature, Jainology, and textual criticism. She was actively involved in the Dalit and women’s movements in Karnataka. She published over fifty books in various genres, including literary criticism, poetry, fiction, and biography.

Kamala Hampana served as the President of the 7th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana (All India Kannada Literary Conference). She has been honoured with several awards including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award, Rajyotsava Prashasti from the Karnataka Government, and Sandesha Awards (2017).
