Gangolli: This time’s fishing cycle will end on May 31
st and already most of the boats have returned back to the fisheries port here. The boats have finished fishing and drawn anchor. This fishing cycle will officially come to an end on June 1
st.
The boats at Gangolli fisheries port are being pulled ashore. Besides, the work on building a shelter for the boat is also being done to prevent the rain water from falling on to the boat. There is a ban on fishing for the next two months and fishing will possibly resume only from the first week of August.
Lack of fish, prices soar
There is a major fall in the amount of fish caught and amount of income generated in comparison to the last two years in Udupi district. This cycle of fishing has not turned out to be fruitful to the fishermen.
Even though the amount of fish caught this time was less, there was a great demand for the resource consequently increasing the prices drastically. This caused a bit of bitterness for fish lovers.
Several reasons
In comparison to previous years, there is a major lack of fish along the coast. In that too, fishing was halted multiple times because of cyclones like Ochi, Gaja, Fani and others. Fishing was also stopped because of the confusion regarding light assisted fishing and adverse weather conditions.
If during last year, the fishermen made a business of Rs 37,458 lakh , this year the business has fallen to Rs 16,307 lakh.
The main reason for the drop is that last year, the fishermen here used to leave fishes at the bunder here. But this year, since it was not followed at Bhatkal, Malpe and other areas, there has been a slightly greater lack of fish resource, opinion officials.
