Cadaveric donation: Organs transported via green corridor

Mangaluru: Through cadaveric donation of his organs, a man who succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident has given life to others.

The donor is Chandrashekhar (48) from Kasaragod who sustained grievous injuries after meeting with an accident on May 11th. He was admitted to the MICU at Indiana Hospital the same day. Although he was provided with the best possible treatment, he failed to respond positively to it and was declared brain dead at midnight on May 16.

Later the organs of the deceased including the eyes, the heart valves, the liver, and both kidneys were harvested after taking approval from Mr. Chandrashekar’s wife Nagaveni. The necessary procedure and protocols were followed in coordination with Jeeva Sarthakathe, the nodal agency of the State for Transplantation of Human Organs Act of 1994.

Green corridor

The city police created a green corridor from Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute to Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) for the swift transport of the harvested organs.

The liver and heart valves were sent by the hospital for transplantation to the recipients at Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru by a 5.30 p.m. flight.

A kidney was sent for transplantation to a recipient in KMC Hospital, Manipal while another kidney was transplanted to a recipient at the institute. The eyes were also transplanted to a recipient locally.
