Aged 40, Somashekhar had come to the falls with his wife and his kids on an outing on May 3. The family was at the falls when a sudden surge in the water washed away Somashekar. While local people raced to the rescue of his family, they were not able to save him. A search for his body was canceled on Sunday attributable to the dark and stormy conditions.
Supposedly, the water surge was because of the release of water by an nearby hydel control station. While a siren had been sounded to caution public before releasing the water, Somashekar and his family being tourists didn’t know about the same.
A Tumkuru local, Somashekar had been serving as a senior scientist at CFTRI for a two years.
