Customs Dept seized gold worth Rs 64 Lakhs at IXE in November

Mangaluru: Customs Department released a statement that they have seized smuggled gold worth Rs 64 lakhs at Mangaluru International Airport in the month of November.

The total weight of gold seized during the month is 2.141 kg and the current value is Rs 64.38 lakh. 

The customs department had intercepted a total of six passengers here for smuggling gold. Out of six, three hailed from Kasargod, two from Bhatkal and one from the district. All passengers had arrived from Dubai. One passenger was arrested and investigation is in progress.

In the first case, 803 grams of gold powder was mixed with a chemical to form a gum and filled into the hollows of the sandals worn by a passenger. In the second case, a passenger had hidden four gold biscuits weighing 466.4 grams in total, under his feet, which were covered with foot bands with socks. In the third case, on the same day, another passenger was intercepted with 3 pieces of gold biscuits weighing a total of 184.29 grams which were found in the inner pocket of his trousers. In the fourth case, a passenger had concealed 4 gold biscuits weighing a total of 466.5 grams in his rectum.

In two other cases, two passengers had concealed gold weighing a total of 221 grams in silver painted bracelets.
