Naik was an advocate by profession and had been at the front line of the battle for a different Dandeli Taluk.
Allegedly, the miscreants attacked Naik with lethal weapons, causing grievous wounds on his neck and chest before escaping from the spot. Local people who discovered Naik lying in a pool of blood, rushed him to the hospital quickly where he was pronounced brought dead by the doctors.
A political disciple of late S Bangarappa and Margaret Alva, Naik had beforehand filled in as President of the Municipal Council and leader of the Dandeli Taluk Formation Committee and Dandeli Block Congress President. He had even contested the recently held Assembly elections after resignation from the post of Municipal Council part.
