Death by accident: Organs donated

Mangaluru/Kadaba: A bus conductor from Bantwal, who went brain dead after suffering severe injury in a bike accident has become an example of humanity amidst the pain as his family decided to donate his organs.

Harinaksha (32) of Vittal Mangalapadala in Bantwal was working as a conductor for a private bus and was on his way to Kukke Subrahmanya temple, seated as pillion rider on the bike being driven by his friend Santosh Kumar on the morning of Dec 31st when the accident took place at around 4:30 am in the early morning. The bike toppled and crashed after a group of foxes suddenly came out of the forest and on to the road due to which, both the riders of the bike suffered grievous injuries.

The severely injured Harinaksha was brought to A J Hospital in Mangaluru. In the backdrop of grievous injury to his head, he went brain dead on Jan 2nd. This was informed to the family of the victim by the doctors of the hospital. Besides they also recommended to donate his organs.

After receiving the permission from the family for organ donation, the information was relayed to hospitals in need of organs. The operation to harvest the organs commenced at 4 am on Thursday morning and at around 7:30 am, the organs were reached to the airport through zero traffic corridor. From the airport, the organs were flown to Bengaluru.

The liver and heart valve was given to Manipal hospital in Bengaluru, a kidney was handed over to KMC hospital in Mangaluru, a cornea and another kidney was taken by A J Hospital, informed Dr Prashanth Marla, Medical Superintendent of the hospital.

Harinaksha is survived by his father Sanjeeva Poojary, mother and five brothers.
