Elderly couple attempts suicide: Saved by temple watchman

Uppinangady: Hurt by a fight with their daughter-in-law, an elderly couple planned to commit suicide by jumping into a river but were saved by the quick thinking of a watchman of temple here. The elderly couple which attempted to commit suicide is identified as Gangadhara (70) and Indira (62) from Krambaru in Belthangady taluk.

Following a fight with their daughter-in-law on Wednesday, the couple left their home, came to Uppinangady and spent the night at the conflux of Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers. Meanwhile, the watchman at Sahasralingeshwara temple identified as Ananda, kept an eye on the couple on the banks of the river.

On Thursday dawn, observing the couple venturing out into the deep waters, Ananda immediately informed the police of the situation. The police which rushed to the location saved the elderly couple from their untimely demise.

Later the couple was taken to Puttur hospital in a 108 ambulance where they were provided with necessary treatment. The police then called the son of the elderly couple and notified him to take necessary action for the safety of his parents and took the same in writing from him.
