It is proven in the Kannada industry that films with poor storylines but with big star cast have flopped at the box office. But, if we calculate the success stories of films with a good storyline, without any big stat cast, the success rate is bigger in recent times.
A still from the movie Thithi
When a new filmmaker, Raam Reddy directed Kannada film “Thithi,” in 2015, nobody had imagined that it would reach the entire world. None of the actors starred in this film have acted in any movie before and this was their first film as well. This movie turned out to be one of the best films of 2015.
Another film that gets added to this list is “Raama Raama Re,” which had only newcomers in it, yet received a lot of success from the audience. If there is any film that shows a good storyline revolving around a simple theme of baldness that can achieve great success, it was Raj B. Shetty’s “Ondu Motteya Kathe.”

Kannada film industry has seen many such movies and films like, “Ondalla Eradalla,” “Sarkari Hiriya Praathamika Shale-Kasaragod”, “Naduve Antaravirali”, “Gombegala Love”, “Lucia”, “Rangi Raranga” in the last decade with new faces and unique storylines.
None of these films had any big stars, but they had was a belief in their storyline and hope that the audience would love their cinema, which created a wave of such attempts in Sandalwood.
This year too filmmakers have been making such attempts and 2 films, “Dia” and “Love Mocktail” have impressed the audience.
Even though the theatrical run of the films was halted due to lockdown in March, Kannada audience around the world embraced them in digital platforms and praised both the films.
Many people who watched them on their mobile phones, TV, or laptops and were left disappointed about missing the opportunity to watch such them on the silver screen and requested the makers to re-release the films again.
This journey of such talented storytellers shows us that they can compete against any big stars with their original cinema. Many attempts have increased now as every writer is busy writing a new tale during this lockdown.
