Two years have passed since the death of Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Vajpayee was known as “Bhishma Pitamah” of Indian politics. He will always be cherished for his contribution to Indian politics

He was born on December 25, 1924 in a Brahmin family. Vajpayee was 93 years old when he breathed his last, he was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on June 11 with kidney issues and complaints of lower respiratory tract infection

Here are a few lesser know facts about Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

1.Vajpayee’s father was Pandit Krishan Bihari Vajpayee who was a teacher. His mother’s name was Krishna.

2.He studied at Victoria College, Gwalior, which is now Laxmibai College. He joined the RSS as a student and became a national level debater.

3.He joined DAV College, Kanpur where he & his father studied Law together. Both attended same class and lived in the same hostel room

4.Atal Bihari Vajpayee always wanted to become a journalist and also worked as a journalist with Panchjanya, Rashtra Dharm, Dainik Swadesh and Veer Arjun.

5.Atal Bihari Vajpayee practiced celibacy and didn’t get married. He adopted a daughter whose name is Namita

6.Atal Bihari Vajpayee was imprisoned for 23 days for participating in the Quit India Movement.

7.After Independence, he became National General Secretary of Bharatiya Jan Sangh and was in-charge of north India.

8.He is the only leader to win six Lok Sabha constituencies from 4 states, UP, MP, New Delhi and Gujarat.

9.He was the first Indian politician to deliver a speech in Hindi at the United Nations General Assembly

10.He suffered a stroke in 2009 after which his speech and hand movement was impaired.
