Bakrid: State govt issues guidelines, warns against cattle slaughter

The Minority Welfare, Hajj and Wakf Department on Wednesday issued guidelines while celebrating the festival of Bakrid (festival of Qurbani) which falls on July 10 this year. The festival holds a lot of significance in Islam and is celebrated with full fervor by the Muslim community.

People have been advised to adhere to the Covid guidelines while offering Namaz at mosques.

Furthermore, it has been advised not to violate the provisions of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 while offering an animal sacrifice. Slaughtering animals in public spaces like parks, roads, near schools, colleges, hospitals premises and religious places, including mosques, is prohibited. Animal sacrifice can be done in areas earmarked by the local administration.

Cleanliness and hygiene must be maintained while offering the animal sacrifice and the waste should be disposed of in a scientific manner without inconveniencing others.

It has been strictly advised to follow the guidelines laid down by the police, animal husbandry department and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.

As per the provisions of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020, slaughter of (i) cows, bulls, and bullocks of all ages, and (ii) buffaloes up to the age of 13 years has been prohibited and violators can be fined in the range of Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh as well as face imprisonment ranging from 3-years.
