Ban on single-use plastic: MCC form teams to make aware shop owners

Mangaluru: In the wake of the Centre’s decision on the ban single-use plastic from July 1, the Mangalore City Corporation has decided to form a five-member team for every six wards. These teams will comprise officials from various departments such as health, pollution control, revenue, etc., The intention is to create awareness among people about the usage of banned plastics.

As per the reports, the municipal corporation would be making the shop owners about the banned plastics. If the owners do not adhere to it, then the officials would slap fines. As per the guidelines, the first-time offenders will be fined Rs 200 and if repeated the fines might go upto Rs 20,000.

According to the new norms, plastic below 100 microns is banned. This includes polystyrene, plastic plates, spoons, cutleries, decorative items, sweet boxes, etc.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the officials conducted raids on shops located at Kavoor, Padil, Bejai, and other places. During the raids, the officials seized 25 kg of plastic and collected a fine of Rs 3600 in total.
