It may be recalled that the BBMP taking the push for push for the Kannada language in an increasingly cosmopolitan city further had asked shops and other commercial establishments to allot 60% of their signboards for Kannada words or risk losing their trade licences.

The Urban Development Department then reportedly ordered BBMP to ensure that hotels, shops, offices and various commercial establishments that fall under its limits and operate with licences from it give prominent space to the Kannada portions of their signage.
