BBMP urges businesses to display 60% Kannada nameplates by Feb 28

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner, Tushar Girinath, has announced that necessary measures will be taken to ensure that 60% of Kannada language nameplates are installed in commercial establishments under BBMP by February 28. He warned that failure to display a Kannada nameplate may lead to the cancellation of the business license.

Addressing a meeting led by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike President Narayana Gowda at the BBMP head office, Girinath stated that discussions will be held with all zonal commissioners to enforce the mandatory use of Kannada language in the nameplates of shops, hotels, malls, and other commercial outlets within the corporation.

The city’s arterial and sub-arterial roads, totaling 1400 km, will be surveyed zone-wise, and notices will be issued to businesses not complying with the 60% Kannada language requirement. Establishments will be given until February 28 to install and implement Kannada language nameplates, and compliance reports must be submitted to the respective zonal commissioners.

Strict legal action will be taken against those failing to display Kannada nameplates, emphasizing the effective implementation of government orders and corporation circulars.

A meeting will be conducted with concerned authorities of major malls falling under BBMP jurisdiction, and a directive will be issued to ensure all shops within the malls adopt the Kannada language on their name boards within 15-20 days. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action under the law.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike President Narayana Gowda expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of officials in the eight zones of Bangalore. He announced plans for a hunger strike at the BBMP office if action is not taken by the February 28 deadline.

Also, a protest will be held on December 27, starting from Sadarahalli toll at Devanahalli airport to Cubbon Park. The forum has requested a report on the actions taken and fines imposed on violators. Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Sivakumar stressed the importance of complying with the law requiring 60% Kannada on nameplates for businesses operating in Bangalore.
