Beat police to compulsorily conduct public outreach programme

Mangaluru: By making it compulsory to conduct public outreach programme by the beat police, importance will be given to for solving any problems and shortages faced by locals, informed Hanumantharaya city DCP.

He was speaking at the phone-in programme held at the office of the city police commissioner after receiving complaints from several citizens.

In the new beat system, every beat limits per police station has been decided and distributed. Almost 30 to 40 staffs from the police station have been assigned for this. Every beat policeman must at least in a month conduct public outreach programme in his beat area. This process has already been started. The beat public outreach programme will be made compulsory to solve local problems as much as possible thus notification for the same will be sent to make it even more ineffective, informed the DCP.

Towing Vehicles

There is an increase in the number of complaints regarding haphazard parking in within Mangaluru Commissionerate limits and in this backdrop, decision has already been taken to conduct operations using towing vehicles and the tenders for the same have been called. The required vehicles are expected to be available in the coming 15 days, said the DCP.

A caller complained that vehicular movement is being affected due to haphazard parking of vehicles along the roadsides at populated and high vehicular density areas in the city. Responding to the complaint, Hanumantharaya said that the tender has been called for four towing vehicles. In a few days, the towing vehicles will hit the road post which the problem of haphazard parking will come down considerably, he said.

Towing vehicle-Fine details

The proposed fines levied on vehicle owners during the proposed towing operation is as follows: Rs 750 for two wheelers, LMV and cars Rs 1,100, medium level vehicles will be charged Rs 1350 and heavy vehicles will be charged Rs 1,600 in fines, informed DCP Uma Prashanth

A caller complained that the humps laid across the prominent roads in the city are unscientific and even then vehicles are being driven at over the limit speeds and therefore, humps similar to the ones laid across the road outside the commissioner office need to be laid suggested the caller.

The DCP assured the caller that the issue will be brought to the notice of the corporation.

Is the flyover height enough?

The flyover being constructed at Pumpwell is at the height of 4.5 meters. There is doubt if the height will allow the passage of heavy vehicle beneath it. Besides, walls need to be constructed on either sides of the flyover. This needs to be brought to the notice of the concerned people, suggested a senior citizen.

Fish lorry problem

A caller complained that fish transporting lorries discharge waste water along the road in the morning itself at Ladyhill, Kuloor road thereby emanating foul smell throughout the road. This needs to be stopped, the caller demanded. Responding to the caller the DCP said that checking will be conducted at the place from where the lorries depart and the fine will be levied on the spot. For repeated offence, the lorries will be seized, he informed.

Another caller complained that since there is no permanent police staff stationed near Jeppu Mahakalipadavu, vehicular movement is facing difficulties. Even though the locals are cooperating to manage the traffic movement, the lack of a policeman is making it difficult. The DCP responded that a staff will be appointed soon.

In the backdrop of the complaints being given during the phone-in programme in connection to the misbehavior of auto-rickshaw drivers, a caller complained that an auto-rickshaw driver had threatened him. The DCP replied that if the auto-rickshaw’s number is provided, action will be initiated against such people.

A factory owner from a factory in Yeyyadi complained that a a few had come collecting money in the name of a labour union and then threatened. Replying to this, the DCP asked the caller to give a specific complaint regarding this.

A caller pointed out that college students are using an old building near Light House Hill road for smoking cigarettes and besides the place is also being used for ganja abuse and other illegal activities. The DCP assured that a watch will be kept regarding this.

Another caller complained that the gym’s in the city were providing exercise through Zumba dance which the caller found too be an opportunity provided for indecency and therefore demanded that strict action be taken against this. Hanumantharaya replied that Zumba dancing had international respect. But sometimes there could be an occurrence of an indecent incident. There is opportunity for the victim to lodge a complaint. For specific cases, action will be initiated, he explained.

Divider Jump

A citizen informed that students are crossing the road by jumping the dividers at A B Shetty road and Besant College Road instead of crossing the roads at the designated points. This can lead to an accident. Therefore, walls need to be constructed along the dividers to prevent divider jumping, the citizen suggested. The DCP assured that an inspection will be carried in connection to this situation.

Beggar trouble

Day by day, the presence of beggars is increasing in the areas of clock tower, state bank and Hampankatta. Citizens are finding to difficult to pass through, complained a woman and the DCP replied that the police will be notified about the same.

A caller form Gurpur complained that the vehicles in Gurpur were violating transport law by installing additional fittings and action must be taken against this.
