Bengaluru: A Special Court in Bengaluru has sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment seven out of 12 people against whom charge-sheet was filed in the May 2021 case of gang-rape of a Bangladeshi.
Eleven of the 12 arrested and charge-sheeted as well as the victim in the case were Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India and living in Bengaluru illegally.
Another accused was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and yet another to five years imprisonment . Two other charge-sheeted persons were convicted of offences under Foreigners Act for nine months simple imprisonment.
Only one of the 12 accused was acquitted as an approver in the case.

The Special Court pronounced the judgement. The charge-sheet in the case was filed within 28 days of the crime. The trial was completed in three months and the judgement was pronounced on Friday.
The incident came to light after a video of the rape first went viral in Bangladesh and was then found to have been committed in Bengaluru.
A case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act as well as under the Foreigners Act.
