Coastal K’taka’s language academies to seek State Language status for Tulu

Mangaluru: The chief of all language academies in coastal Karnataka have decided to come together to pressure the State government into declaring Tulu as one of the official languages ​​of the State.

In a multilingual cultural event to be hosted in February by Beary Sahitya Akademi, presidents of five language academies – Tulu, Beary, Konkani, Arebhashe and Kodava – will release a joint statement and appeal to the State government.

The Tulu Sahitya Akademi’s delegation in association with various organizations has already met with State and Central government leaders on several occasions, to make Tulu language as one of the official language of Karnataka.

The Akademi has also appealed to add Tulu language in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution.

During the joint budget session of the State’s legislature which will be held from January 28 to February 5. Legislators from coastal Karnataka are likely to raise the issue about making Tulu an official State language.

“The Tulu language has an ancient history, and the Academy is trying to incorporate Tulu into 8th Schedule of the Constitution. As a first step, we have already appealed to the chief minister to declare Tulu as a State language. All language academies’ presidents from coastal Karnataka will make a joint appeal during a program to be held in February and organised by Beary,” said Dayanand Kattalasar, president of Tulu Sahitya Akademi.
