Cyclone Fengal Effect: Heavy Rains in Coastal Areas; Orange Alert for Dec 3

Bengaluru: After wreaking havoc with heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, Cyclone Fengal’s impact has extended to Karnataka. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall was witnessed in parts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, and Kasaragod districts on Monday, with an orange alert issued for these areas for Tuesday (Dec 3).

IMD has predicted significant rainfall in Udupi, Bengaluru, Chikkamagaluru, and Chikkaballapur districts. An orange alert indicates rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow alert suggests rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

Scattered heavy rains are also likely in Hassan, Mandya, and Ramanagara districts. Moderate rains are expected in most parts of Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, and Kolar districts.

Holidays Announced for Educational Institutions

In anticipation of heavy rains due to Cyclone Fengal, the district administrations of Kodagu, Kasaragod, Udupi, and Chikkamagaluru have declared a holiday on Dec 3 for educational institutions.

  • Kodagu: District Commissioner Venkaraj has declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, schools, and colleges (excluding degree and postgraduate institutions).
  • Kasaragod: District Commissioner Impashekar has declared a holiday for all institutions, including professional colleges, tuition centers, and madrasas. However, model residential schools are excluded.
  • Udupi: District Commissioner Vidya Kumari has declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, schools, and pre-university colleges. Heavy rains have already begun in the district, and further downpours are expected on Tuesday. Residents have been advised to remain cautious.
  • Chikkamagaluru: A similar holiday declaration has been made by the district administration in view of the heavy rain forecast.

Advisory for Fishermen

The IMD has warned of strong winds with speeds ranging from 35 to 45 km/h, potentially reaching up to 55 km/h, along the South Karnataka coast on Dec 2 and 3. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

Further Rainfall Predictions

Heavy rainfall is expected in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Mysuru, Kodagu, Ramanagara, and Chamarajanagara districts on Dec 3, according to IMD officials.
