Santosh crashed around 135km into the stage on a gravel track and had to forfeit the stage.

The rally is divided into 12 stages and has competitors traversing 7646km. Incidentally, Stage 4 is the longest stage of the rally.

Santosh represents the Hero Motosports team and last year they withdrew from the rally after the death of rally team member, Paulo Goncalves.

It was Santosh’s seventh attempt at the Rally. He was the first Indian to complete the race in 2015.

During the 2013 Abu Dhabi desert challenge he had suffered third-degree burns to his neck after his bike caught fire.
