Dr. Sandhya Shenoy bestowed Kalpana Chawla Young Scientist Award

Mangaluru: Dr. Sandhya Shenoy U, a research scientist at the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Srinivas University Institute of Engineering & Technology, Mukka, has been awarded the prestigious Kalpana Chawla Young Scientist Award by the Karnataka State Government. The award recognizes her significant contributions to the field of science and technology, specifically in the domain of thermoelectrics.

Dr. Shenoy, who is part of the Material Science and Engineering Department at Srinivas University, received the award on September 26, 2024, from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at a ceremony held in Bengaluru. The event was graced by renowned scientist Prof. C.N.R. Rao, and Science and Technology Minister N.S. Boseraju, among other dignitaries.

The Karnataka State Government presents the Kalpana Chawla Young Scientist Award to recognize the exceptional achievements of women scientists and engineers in the field of Engineering Sciences.  The award comprises a medal, a certificate, and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Dr. Shenoy was recognized for her outstanding research work in thermoelectrics, an area of study focused on the conversion of heat into electricity and vice versa.

Over the past two years, her impactful research has earned her a spot on Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists in the world. Her contribution to science has been lauded by Srinivas University Chancellor Dr. C. A. Raghavendra Rao and Pro-Chancellor Dr. A. Srinivas Rao.

According to a media release, Dr. U Sandhya Shenoy has also been named among the top 2% of scientists worldwide, as per the “Updated Science-wide Author Databases of Standardized Citation Indicators” published by Stanford University, USA. This recognition is based on a composite score that highlights her outstanding contributions to Materials Science.

Her research focuses on Materials for Energy and Environmental Applications, particularly in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, with a specialization in Thermoelectric and Photocatalytic properties.
