‘Exaggerated reports’: Paytm issues clarification on Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s arrest in motor vehicle incident

Amid media reports that Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma was arrested in a traffic offense case in February, the company has issued a statement clarifying that media reports claiming the nature of the arrest are exaggerated.

Several media reports claimed that Sharma was arrested in Delhi on February 22 after he had allegedly rammed his Jaguar Land Rover car into the car of the District Commissioner of Police of South Delhi on Aurobindo Marg.

According to the report, the incident had taken place when the DCP’s driver Deepak was out to fill petrol in the car. Sharma had fled the scene following the mishap however Deepak had noted the registration number of the car and matter was then reported to the police. A case of rash driving had been filed at Malviya Nagar Police Station.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the car belonged to a Gurugram-based company and it was traced back to Sharma who resides in South Delhi. He was then summoned to the station and arrested. Sharma secured bail as the offense was minor and fell under a bailable provision of law.

Clarifying the incident, the Fintech company in a statement said that no harm was caused to any person or property in the said incident

“Media reports claiming the nature of the arrest are exaggerated, as even the complaint against the vehicle was for a minor offence under a bailable provision of law,” read the statement.

Requisite legal formalities were completed on the same day, it added.
