Five fly species given scientific names that pay tribute to the Marvel comic universe

Australian Scientists gave scientific names to 165 new species this year and picked five flies to name after the world’s favorite superheroes and villains within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One of the species has been named after ‘Deadpool’ and another after comic book creator Stan Lee. The other three are named after ‘Loki’, ‘Thor’ and ‘Black Widow’.

Scientists at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) claim that all five species are robber flies, which are assassins of the insect world

The scientists also claim that venom produced by spider wasps might be useful for treating Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy.
