In 2009, Shivarame Gowda got a resounding victory from Koppal Lok Sabha constituency contesting on a BJP ticket. However, he quit the BJP after being denied a ticket in the next general elections in 2014. Consequently, he joined the Congress. He has worked within the Congress organization for the past 10 years but decided to rejoin the saffron party.
