Gangolli: Although the two months ban on fishing has concluded, the beginning of deep sea fishing season from here may be delayed by some days due to inclement weather at Gangolli. According to sources, mechanized fishing is expected to start after Aug 10th. Conclude fishing in May The boats which have lain anchored to the shore are preparing to venture out into the sea and last minute preparations are on at Gangolli bunder. Preparations are being done for the sequential release of the boats anchored at Manganese Warf here. Mechanized fishing has already started in Mangaluru while it is expected to start at Malpe in a couple of days. The 60 small trawlers, 35-40 370s, more than 40 purse seine boats, besides hundreds of gill nets, matu trap, barbed wire and Pati boats will be leaving for fishing from this bunder. Although there was an expectation for a prosperous fishing cycle last year, it was bogged down by adverse weather, cyclone, ban of light assisted fishing, Goa’s ban on fish from Karnataka and many other reasons. Fishing to start after Aug 10th The fishermen in Gangolli have already made preparations to venture out into the sea. But since the sea is currently rough with high waves, it may cause problem for fishing and hence, they have planned to start their fishing expedition on Aug 10 or 11th. Fishing will be affected since the jetty at the bunder has not been repaired, the breakwater at Kodi and Gangoli has not been extended further and the silt accumulated in the estuary has not yet been cleared – Ramesh Kunder, President, Purse Seining Fishermens Association, Gangolli Bunder still remains to be repaired Much time has passed since the jetty at the second auctioning courtyard here collapsed and the funds for its repair had been granted by the Port and Fisheries Department during last June. But, even though the ban period has passed and the cycle for mechanized fishing has begun, it is not possible to conduct any fishing activity here. Because of this, there is a problem regarding the space available for those boats which have finished fishing and are arriving back to the port to unload their catch and it would be convenient if it was repaired before the arrival of the boats, opinion the fishermen.
