Geethartha Chintana-119: Viewing soul and mind as husband and wife

10:31 AM Dec 10, 2024 | Team Udayavani |

No external objects are inherently responsible for happiness or sorrow. “Dheerastatra na muhyati”—if one resides harmoniously within their mind, there is happiness. If the mind does not cooperate, there is sorrow. Sleep should come when desired, and it should not arrive when it is unwelcome. Letting go of the ego allows the mind to cooperate.

The soul and mind are like a husband and wife. The mind is the wife, and the soul is the husband. If there is no mutual understanding between them, there is sorrow. No matter how much wealth one possesses, it does not guarantee happiness. Happiness can exist even in poverty. Harmony between a husband and wife leads to happiness. Similarly, an agreement between the intellect and the soul yields positive outcomes.

Birth and death are not the true causes of happiness or sorrow. Ultimately, happiness or sorrow lies in how we carry our minds with us. Those who cannot align their mind with themselves experience sorrow. If one trains and disciplines the mind, it yields good outcomes.

Just as the soul and mind function as husband and wife within, the external world reflects this dynamic in the relationships of husband and wife. Even sorrow can be classified into Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic forms. Moha is Tamasic Sorrow. Sage Sharabhanga ended his life because he did not want to burden others, that is Sattvic sorrow.
