Actions aligned with God’s will are virtuous, while those opposing it are sinful—this is the fundamental benchmark. However, understanding this immediately isn’t easy.

The Padma Purana conveys this principle:
Smarthavyah Satatam Vishnur Vismarthavyo Na Jatuchit |
Sarve Vidhi-Nishedhah Syur Etayor Eva Kinkarah ||

This verse underscores the importance of living life in harmony with God’s desires. It emphasizes remembering the Lord constantly and adhering to the laws prescribed by Him. Forgetting His rules and acting solely for personal satisfaction is akin to transgressing divine principles.

Here, Vidhi refers to the scriptural commandments that guide our lives. Lord Vishnu says: “Shrutis and Smritis are my commandments.” Therefore, living by their guidance is a duty, while ignoring them is a transgression.

Pundits, grounded in these teachings, neither grieve for the deceased nor for the living. They remain detached from sorrow, recognizing life and death as natural cycles. Even those who are alive should not evoke lamentation simply because they have yet to pass on.
