Geethartha Chinthane - 113: Lord Krishna Offers His Own Example

In a play, Ravana once refused to fall, insisting, “I won’t fall unless I receive my payment.” Eventually, after collecting his due, he enacted the fall as per the drama. Such things happen in plays, not in real life. Similarly, Arjuna was aware that nothing could ever harm Krishna.

Krishna explained to Arjuna, “If nothing can happen to me, then nothing can happen to anyone else either.” Krishna then asked, “Did I ever say that the Kauravas or your relatives would not die? Did I claim that Krishna would never die? No. Just as it is impossible for me to cease to exist, it is equally impossible for anyone else to truly cease to exist.” Using his own example, Krishna illustrated this eternal truth.

The root cause of sorrow is mistaking the body for the soul. When one learns to love the soul, such grief will not arise. The mistake people make is identifying an individual solely with their physical form. This is why cremating a body often brings deep sorrow; we view the body as the person and fail to see the eternal soul.

Krishna advises: “Cultivate love for the soul and let go of attachment to the body. When you love the soul, you will realize that the soul is eternal. It cannot cease to exist. Neither can I.”

To emphasize this profound truth, Krishna uses the word ‘eva’ (meaning “indeed” or “always”), leaving no room for doubt. Krishna’s distinctive style lies in addressing every possible uncertainty with unwavering clarity.
