Geethartha Chinthane-116: Serious yet trivial in course of time

Udupi: During my childhood, I was obsessed with Yakshagana. It was the only topic I talked about with everyone. I was a great admirer of Keremane Mahabala Hegde. Different people admired different artists, and the discussions revolved around them. One day, his troupe came to our village.

The play Samagra Vishwamitra was to be performed. However, my father refused to pay for an easy chair ticket, and even denied me the five paisa needed for a floor ticket, scolding me in the process. Overwhelmed, I felt, “Life is meaningless if I cannot see Mahabala Hegde.” That night, I decided to jump into a well.

When I reached the well, a large frog croaked loudly. Terrified, I ran back to my room and hid under a blanket. Eventually, during our first temple festival, I got to witness not only Mahabala Hegde’s Yakshagana but also many other performances.

At that moment, the incident seemed extremely serious, as if life itself was a waste. But when viewed from a later stage in life, it feels trivial.

The mind has multiple layers, and intellect is the most superior of them. While the mind is linked to emotions, intellect is connected to decision-making. Reason is more important than emotions. Instead of being driven by emotional foundations, one should operate from a foundation of wisdom.
