Geethartha Chinthane 18: Serving God Through Various Professions

The term “swa-vihita” can be interpreted in various ways. It signifies what is beneficial for the world. It suggests that one should pursue a profession that benefits others. It also implies having a “special charm” i.e. having a particular attitude or inclination. For example, people have different preferences, whether in music, agriculture, education, or other fields. Such individuals can dedicate themselves to their chosen field and serve the Lord through their work.

Professions like law, accounting, and other modern occupations can also be seen as forms of worship if done with the right intention. However, one should avoid professions that harm others or ruin lives. Such professions are not necessary, and there is no value in offering the earnings from such work to God. Not only should one avoid engaging in wrongful professions, but one should also be clear and certain about their choice.

In the Gita, Lord Krishna uses the term “Bodhayati Bhagavan Narayana” instead of “Aajnapayati” (commands) or “Sandeshayati” (delivers a message). This indicates that Krishna’s intention is not to issue orders but to inspire knowledge and wisdom from within. We pray to Geetacharya that this moment of enlightenment be realized during the celebration of Srikrishna Leelotsava.
