Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) proposal for use of biomining technique at the Pachchanady landfill site is yet to be approved by the Directorate of Municipal Administration.

Recently the state government had released Rs 14 crore towards the disbursement of compensation to the 24-affected families in the Pachanady landslide during last monsoon. As much as six lakh tonnes of garbage had slid on to 25 acres of land at Mandara here destroying houses, property, and agricultural fields.

Biomining process, involves the extraction and segregation of minerals and other useful materials dumped at landfill sites. These recovered items are later sent for recycling while the bio-degradable waste gets decomposed.

The biomining technique will be used as per the guidelines of legacy waste management prepared by the Central Pollution Control Board.
