Haveri: An elderly woman from Haveri’s Kunikeri village has donated two acres of land valued at around Rs one crore for building a school for the village children.

Referred to as Ajji (granny), Huchchamma Chowdri. aged 75, now works at the same school as a head cook for mid-day meals.

The 75-year-old had moved to Kunikeri village following her marriage with Basappa Chowdri and the couple made a living by working on the field. The couple did not have any children and after Basappa’s demise, around 30 years ago, Huchchamma found herself lonely. She continued to work in her field and led a simple life.

Upon learning that government officials were searching for a space to build a school for the village children, Huchchamma came forth to donate one acre of her land for the noble cause. Later she donated the remaining acre when she learnt that the school committee was searching for land close by to build a playground for the kids.

Huchchamma works as a farm labourer in others people’s fields when the school is closed.

As per a News18 report, Huchchamma says though she didn’t give birth, she now has all the school kids calling her Ajji (granny). “I feel extremely happy to feed 300 odd kids every single day. Why settle for one or two children when you can call 300 your own?” told News18.

When asked if she is aware of the value of the land donated by her, Hunhchchamma states, “All I need is enough food to satiate my hunger, which I get. What would I do with all that money? These kids will remember me forever, won’t they? That is enough.”
