Heavy rain: Schools closed in Udupi on July 9, statewide heavy rainfall expected for next 5 days

In light of the continuing heavy rainfall, the district has experienced significant flooding in low-lying areas. As a precautionary measure, the District Administration has declared a holiday for Anganwadi centers, primary, secondary schools, and PU colleges on Tuesday, July 9.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert due to the intense rainfall. Consequently, District Commissioner Vidya Kumari announced a complete holiday for educational institutions across the district on Monday. However, the holiday does not apply to degree, postgraduate, diploma, and ITI colleges.

Despite heavy rains on Sunday evening, no holiday was initially declared, causing inconvenience for many students. The district administration has now provided a helpline for natural disaster-related assistance at 1077 and 0820-2574802.

The Karnataka Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall for the next five days in coastal districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. Strong winds are expected to accompany the rain in these regions. A rain belt is predicted to form at altitudes between 4.5 to 7.6 kilometers, tilting southward with average sea level height, leading to heavy rainfall in the coastal districts.

From July 8 to July 12, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts are expected to experience widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall. Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts may also witness heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas, with wind speeds reaching 30-40 km/h.

In northern inland districts such as Belagavi, Bagalkote, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur, and Vijayapura, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40-50 km/h are anticipated.

Southern inland districts, including Ballari, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, and Vijayanagar, are expected to experience light to moderate rain with continuous winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h. The Karnataka Meteorological Department predicts that after July 13, the rainfall intensity will decrease, resulting in moderate rain.
