Heavy rains in Karnataka coast create flooding; disrupt traffic flow

Mangaluru/Udupi: The coast received high rainfall on Saturday afternoon and evening. The heavy rainfall in Mangaluru city by nightfall caused water-logging at various places and disrupted traffic.

Heavy showers were also reported from parts of Sullia and Puttur-Vittal. It was cloudy during the day in Bantwal, Belthangady, and Mangaluru taluks.

The railway underpass at Padil is filled with water and vehicles are moving slowly. In some parts of Kodialbail, drains were overflowing and water flowed onto the road.

Despite sunshine throughout the day, parts of in Udupi district including Udupi, Manipal, Kaup, Shirva, Katapadi, and Kalyanpur market area, received heavy rainfall as the evening wore on. The city roads were also flooded and the heavy weekend traffic worsened at Kalsanka, Coastal junction, and other places in Udupi city.

However, Karkala and Kundapur taluk reported light rainfall.

Highways flooded in Bantwal:

Heavy rains with lightning and thunderstorms were witnessed in Bantwal taluk on Saturday night.   The National highway between Kaikamba to Farangipete was flooded by rainwater, slowing down vehicle movement.

In Dharmasthala,  road traffic was blocked for more than an hour and a half as water flowed over a small bridge at Mannapalla near the bathing ghat.

More rains likely

The met department said thunderstorms are likely to occur across the coastal state on Sunday due to a low-pressure area that has developed over the Arabian sea.

3 flights diverted to Bengaluru

Between 7 pm and 9 pm on Saturday, 3 flights scheduled to arrive at the Mangalore airport from Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore had to be diverted to Bengaluru due to rain and inclement weather.
