High wave and swell surge alerts issued for Coastal Karnataka

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued high wave alerts and swell surge watches for the coastal regions of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada.

These alerts are in effect from 17:30 hours on 19 July 2024 to 23:30 hours on 21 July 2024.

A high wave warning has been issued for Udupi’s coast from Byndoor to Kapu, with forecasted high waves in the 3.5 to 3.7 meters range. A swell surge watch is also in effect for this region, with swell waves in the range of 10.0 to 12.0 seconds period and heights of 2.6 to 2.8 meters.

A high wave warning has been issued in Uttara Kannada, from Majali to Bhatkal. High waves in the range of 3.8 to 4.0 meters are expected. A swell surge watch is also in effect for this region, with swell waves in the range of 10.0 to 12.0 seconds period and heights of 2.9 to 3.0 meters.

INCOIS advisory said that small vessels should not ply, all nearshore recreational activities should be suspended, and there is a possibility of erosion and wave surges.

Meanwhile, a high wave alert has been issued for Dakshina Kannada, from Mulki to Mangaluru, with high waves ranging from 3.2 to 3.4 meters are expected. Authorities advise exercising caution during marine operations and nearshore recreation. Additionally, a swell surge watch has been issued for the same area, with swell waves in the range of 10.0 to 12.0 seconds period and heights of 2.4 to 2.5 meters.
