Researchers from IIT-Bombay have created an AI-based model using proteomics technology that can help differentiate between two major species of malaria parasites, P falciparum and P vivax.

These species are not differentiable using the rapid diagnostic tests (RDT), Shalini Aggarwal, who was part of the study, said.

As reported by HT, the artificial intelligence (AI)-based models can be used for the diagnosis and prognosis of the two species of malaria parasite based on the changing trend of proteins in human blood.

The researchers are currently working on developing a diagnostic kit prototype. Funded by the department of biotechnology, Government of India, their study and findings were published in the journal Communications Biology, Nature, in November last year.
