Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet has decided to strengthen the existing cattle shelters (goshala) rather than construct new ones. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Out of the department’s allocated budget, Rs 10.50 crore has been earmarked to support old cattle shelters across 14 districts. The funds will be used to enhance these facilities instead of setting up new ones.

Previously, the BJP government had announced the construction of 30 government goshalas, one for each district, as part of the 2021-22 budget. Currently, 16 such goshalas are operational, with an additional 35 promised in the 2022-23 budget. Of these, 14 have been completed, but none have started housing cattle.

Consequently, instead of constructing the remaining goshalas, the government has resolved to allocate Rs 2.50 crore each to goshalas in Dakshina Kannada (2), Udupi (2), Karwar, Hassan, Bengaluru Urban, Mandya, Bengaluru Rural, Dharwad, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Bidar, and Belagavi to bolster their operations.
