The elections, held on December 10 for the 25 vacancies in Legislative Council from 20 constituencies, had witnessed 99.87 percent voter turnout.

The counting began at 8 AM today at counting stations across the state. There are 90 candidates in the fray for the 25 seats.

The elections assume importance due to the upcoming elections to the legislative assembly (Vidhana Sabha) next year. Many believe the MLC polls may signal the mood of the electorate for the elections next year. Therefore, the MLC elections have become a question of prestige for BJP, Congress, and JD(S) — the three largest parties in the state.
