Karwar: Rs 2 Cr cash seized from passenger en route to Mangaluru; Hawala money suspected

Karwar: A huge cache of currency being transported was seized from a man while it was being taken to Mangaluru Form Mumbai.

Railway police said that it had confiscated Rs two crore cash, from Chen Singh alias Manohar Singh (22), resident of Jaloor Sunatri Varanwa in Rajasthan. The cash was found packed in 100 small bundles of Rs 2,000 currency notes and wound with a brown packing tape, police said.

The matter came to light after the accused was found travelling on a train without a ticket. He was behaving suspiciously and refused to divulge what was in the packet he was carrying at the time. The Railway police were alerted and the accused was handed over to them at Karwar.

During the interrogation, police said, the accused told them that he was unaware of the contents of the package. The packet was allegedly handed to him by Bharat Bhai alias Pinto in Mumbai for whom he works for a salary of Rs 15,000. The package was to be delivered to Raju in Mangaluru as per Pinto Bhai’s instructions, police said.

Meanwhile, police suspect that the cash is part of a hawala transaction and are investigating the matter further.
