Mangaluru: Muzrai Minister Kota Sreenivasa Poojary on Monday, July 26, issued an official order barring diversion of funds from the Hindu religious endowments department and temples to other religious centres.

This was following concerns expressed by a section of the religious leaders that the funds under the department were being diverted to non-Hindu institutions.

As per the order, the government has withheld grants that were being given from the religious endowments department to 111 non-hindu religious prayer centres by way of annual maintenance. The centres were getting funds as compensation under the Inam Abolition Act of 1977.

Also, henceforth, non-Hindu religious institutions will obtain grants from other departments like the Minorities Welfare, Haj and Wakf departments.

The Minister said the grants from the endowments department will only be spent on Hindu temples and institutions, and appropriate instructions have been given in this regard.
