Kundapura: Thousands of fish were discovered dead under suspicious circumstances in the Kallagara pond located in the city municipality limits here on Friday.
Concerned about the development, citizens immediately notified municipal officials. The officials, along with civic workers, swiftly undertook the task of removing the dead fish from the pond.
Environmental engineers and representatives from the pollution control board were dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident. At present, the precise cause behind the mass fish mortality remains unknown, and a few specimens have been sent for examination to ascertain the root cause.
Various factors contributing to the fish deaths have been suggested, ranging from a decrease in water levels leading to reduced oxygen levels, poisoning, to excessive growth of algae. Environmental Engineer Guruprasada Shetty of the municipality explained that such factors could contribute to the fish’s death, but it is crucial to await the findings of the Pollution Control Board officials.
