Lakshadweep becomes new Honeymoon haven for newlyweds in Mangaluru!

In the aftermath of tensions between India and the Maldives, the district administration has taken a proactive step by convening a meeting to explore the revival of the tourist ship service to Lakshadweep. The ferry service, which had been discontinued some years ago, is now under discussion as a potential alternative amid the prevailing diplomatic circumstances.

The move to explore Lakshadweep as a budget-friendly alternative comes against the backdrop of expensive travel options to the Maldives. Mangaluru travel agencies suggest that facilitating more affordable travel connections to Lakshadweep and the Andaman Islands could be beneficial, provided additional infrastructure is in place.

Traditionally, many newlyweds from he city opted for the Maldives, known for its allure as a romantic honeymoon destination. However, the high expenses, including hotel rates ranging from Rs 1 to 2 lakhs and steep costs for basic amenities like drinking water, have led to the consideration of Lakshadweep as a viable option.

Lakshadweep, often compared to the Maldives in terms of beauty, has gained popularity, especially after the Prime Minister’s visit. Sivanand, MD of Vikram Travels, notes an increase in inquiries and predicts a potential rise in tourists visiting Lakshadweep in the future.

Currently, the available options to reach Lakshadweep from Mangaluru involve either a cruise ship or a flight, both requiring travel to Kochi. To streamline the process, the suggestion is to bring Lakshadweep cruise ships departing from Mumbai to Mangaluru, utilizing the existing cruise lounge system for tourists.

From Kochi, the distance to Lakshadweep is longer (391 km), while if one were to travel from Mangaluru, it would be shorter (356 km). This presents an additional advantage.

To enhance the travel experience, it is proposed to implement a project that was planned seven and a half years ago—a dedicated jetty for Lakshadweep at the cost of Rs 65 crore. The project aimed to construct a 300-meter-long jetty, a warehouse, and a well-equipped rest stop for passengers at Mangaluru Old Port. However, the plan has yet to be executed, and the demand is growing for a more accessible departure point from Mangalore.

District Collector Mullaimugilan emphasized the need for immediate implementation of the project, citing advantages such as the shorter distance from Mangaluru to Lakshadweep compared to Kochi. A meeting is scheduled to gather information and insights from individuals familiar with the past ferry service to Lakshadweep, with hopes of revitalizing the tourism link between Mangalore and the exotic archipelago.
